What are Mold Spores?
Mold spores can more easily be described as baby mold. The mold spores float around in the air, both inside and outside. When they land on moist surfaces, the spores grow into full-fledged mold. In the wild, mold growth is beneficial because it helps in the decomposition of dead trees, branches and leaves. However inside the home, mold fungus can be harmful. At the least, mold can irritate allergies, cause attacks in asthmatics and fill the home with an unpleasant odor. However, some types of mold can make people very sick.
Black mold fungi is one of the most dangerous types of mold and must be dealt with by mold removal experts. There are fungicide mold killers of industrial strength that these pros can use, however you and your family will need to stay elsewhere while your home is being cleared of harmful mold. For small cases of mold that is not black in color, you may be able to get rid of it yourself. What you will need to get rid of the mold fungi is some protective gear and the right cleaning supplies.
Make sure you wear elbow length rubber gloves, old clothes, safety goggles and a mask over your nose and mouth. This will prevent you from being exposed to any mold fungi spores. To kill mold, bleach is a good cleanser. There are also cleansers especially made to get rid of mold. When you eradicate the mold you should find that the smell fades away also, however letting in fresh air and using scented air fresheners may help as well. Once you have gotten rid of mold, it is very important to take steps necessary to keep it away.
To prevent mold spores from growing into mold, make sure your home is dry. Check all pipes for leaks, as mold can grow inside walls and areas where pipes are located. Make sure to keep your bathroom dry, as this is a prime location for mold and its relative mildew. Attics and basements are also prime areas for mold to grow, so make sure yours are kept dry. Dryness is the number one enemy of mold growth, so keep that in mind when working to prevent the problem from reoccurring. And, to avoid mold in the refrigerator, make sure you throw out any leftovers after a couple of days.
