How to Get Rid of Mold Smell

Among the most unwanted smells you could have in the home is an unpleasant mold smell. However, getting rid of mold smell is easy providing you use the correct strategies. The musty smell that is associated with mold can permeate your home, your clothing, your linens – everything. The number one contributor to mold is moisture. Mold spores by themselves cannot grow into mold without a moist place to land. So to prevent household mold, keep all your rooms and surfaces dry, and check all of your pipes for leaks.


To eliminate any mold smell, the first step is to kill the mold. There are special cleaners that are made to get rid of mold, however bleach works also. Make sure you are wearing protective gear as the chemicals in these cleaners can be toxic. It is recommended that you protect your eyes, nose and mouth, and wear rubber gloves. Also, wear old clothes because you may get dirty. If your mold problem is severe, there are professionals you can call in to take care of the problem for you. In dangerous toxic mold cases you may be required to leave the home until the mold is gone.

Mold smells are most unpleasant, however once the mold is gone the smell should dissipate. Ventilating the area can help speed the process, also you may want to try some heavy duty odor removal products. If the area where the mold was happens to be a wall or other painted area, you can repaint after cleaning and drying with special paint that is resistant to mold. This coat of paint can also help disguise mold odor left behind. Also, you may want to try scented candles (do not leave unattended) or a spray odor remover.

There are a variety of ways to get rid of mold smell. It might take awhile, especially if you have to kill and scrub the mold away, ventilate the area and wait for it to dry. There may be a lingering odor even after all the mold is gone but if the area is kept dry it will eventually go away. If you have a problem getting rid of moldy smells in your home, consider consulting a professional. There may be mold you are not aware of in your home or other steps that must be taken to solve this unpleasant problem.
