Mold and Mildew Removal Techniques
In contrast to what some may think, mold and mildew removal requires different techniques as they just are not the same thing. Mold mildew and various other organisms are types of fungi. While mildew, mold and other grimy growths may look and seem the same, they are different. The reason people associate the two together is because they both grow in moist conditions and have similar characteristics. One way to tell the two apart is where they are growing and what they look like. Mildew is normally white or grayish in color while mold tends to be more colorful and can be seen in green, blue, red or even black.
Mold is found growing on old food but can also grow in wet areas of the home, while mildew is commonly seen in bathrooms, on old papers and on fabrics. Both mold and mildew removal requires the right strategies to succeed. First you must understand that both grow in wet areas. If you have moist rooms, leaky areas or other problems with too much moisture in the home this is a red flag for mold and mildew. If the problem is evident, step one is killing and cleaning the existing mold and/or mildew. There are cleaning products made for this, also bleach can be effective.
For widespread problems, professional mold and mildew removal may be required. This is especially the case with hazardous molds and mold that is growing in the walls of a home. Hopefully your problem will not be this serious and you will be able to get rid of the mold or mildew on your own. One of the most telling pieces of evidence is mold mildew smell, which is unmistakable and unpleasant. As mentioned before, getting rid of mold and mildew with bleach or other cleaning products can kill the fungi and should also get rid of the mold odors as well.
If you have taken steps to get rid of mold, mildew or other odorous fungi in the home and still smell mold odors or mildew odors, try a second cleaning then freshen the area by opening windows and letting it air out. There are innovative new air freshening sprays that not only freshen the air but kill and eliminate smelly bacteria in the air. While unpleasant and no fun to clean up, effective mold and mildew removal is achievable. And to keep these fungi away, make sure all areas of your home are dry.
