Moisture, Mold and Your Air Conditioner
There is no doubt that the number one contributing factor when it comes to mold is simply water. To create this fungi, spores land on moisture – mold is created. The spores are unable to grow into mold unless they land in a moist area. In nature, moist forest floors are ideal breeding grounds for mold. And in forests, mold is a good thing because it helps to decompose dead organic matter. However, it is not so good in your home. It can be downright harmful, and it pops up in the most unlikely of places.
For example, mold air conditioner infestation is quite common. The reason for this is because air conditioners get dusty and condense moisture. Dust plus condensation is a perfect recipe for mold. And, when you run your air conditioner you might actually be blowing mold into your home. This can cause sneezing, allergies, irritation of the throat and nasal passages, and more. Asthmatics may suffer increased asthma attacks due to mold in the home. Luckily if you believe your air conditioner is infested with mold, there are ways to clean it.
If you are handy with tools, you can actually take your air conditioner apart and clean it out. This involves wiping down surfaces with bleach mixed with water, drying them, and vacuuming out any accumulated dust. Before reinstalling the air conditioner, make sure all components are completely dry. If your air conditioner is too infested with mold for you to handle, you can take it to a professional cleaner or simply replace the appliance. If you look around you can find great sales on air conditioners or even buy a new one in good condition. Air conditioners are valuable in hot summer months however they are no good for you if infested with mold.
When it comes to moisture, mold is its closest friend. In addition to growing in your air conditioner, mold can grow in your bathroom, behind drywall, in the basement, even in your refrigerator. The best way to prevent mold after you have gotten rid of it is to keep moist areas dry. This means cleaning up wet areas and possibly using a dehumidifier to remove humidity in the air. Also, if you think your home is infested with mold behind your drywall, it is time to call in the professionals. The costs vary depending on how bad your infestation is, what kind of mold has to be removed and of course the company so do shop around.
