How to Identify Mold

One of the most common complaints regarding allergens and fungi is mold. However, it is important to know how to identify mold so you can get rid of it. Mold is often found growing on food that has been left out or in the refrigerator too long. Mold can look fuzzy sometimes and can be blue, green, red, black or a myriad of colors. Not only does it grow on old food, it grows in moist areas. In nature, mold performs a valuable service in helping to decompose dead organic matter. However, it is not something you want in your home.

Dust, mold, mildew and dander are some common causes of allergic reactions. For individuals with asthma, attacks may be triggered. Even for those without asthma or allergies, irritation to the skin, eyes, nose and even lungs may occur. While most mold is simply irritating and unpleasant, some can be quite dangerous to your health. If you are not sure what kind of mold you are dealing with, call in a professional company to identify and eradicate the problem. In the case of potentially dangerous mold, it is better to be safe than sorry and call in the pros.

One thing you should know about mold is that it spreads via spores that cannot be seen by the human eye. These spores float around everywhere both indoors and out. You cannot keep spores out of your home, but you can prevent them from growing into mold by making sure all areas of your home are dry. Mold cannot form in dry areas, it needs moisture to grow. Basements, attics, bathrooms and anywhere there are leaky pipes are prime locations for mold growth.

It is fairly simple to identify mold. Mildew is in the same family but is usually gray or white and is found on papers, clothes and common in bathrooms. Both mold and mildew can be killed with bleach or a special cleanser made for mold removal. One of the worst things about dealing with a case of mold or mildew is the smell. It is a musty, filthy odor that permeates everything if the problem is not eliminated properly. Once you get rid of the mold, the smell should go away but if it lingers for a while, try letting in fresh air or treating the area with a fragranced disinfectant spray or other air freshener.
