Preventing Bathroom Mold
Bathroom mold is one of the most common types of mold in the home. The reason mold grows so easily in bathrooms is because the atmosphere in these rooms is often quite damp. Many people are not aware that mold spores need plenty of moisture to grow and this is naturally found in every bathroom. The easiest way of preventing mold in your bathroom is to dry all surfaces after bathing or showering. You may also want to use a bleach cleaner or special cleaner made for mold if you suspect mold is in your bathroom.
Another area for mold is the basement. That musty basement smell that greets your nose when you enter the room is likely caused by mold. When it comes to mold, basements are top areas because they are often damp and kept unattended for long periods. Mold crawlspace problems are also common because these tiny areas also accumulate moisture. One type of mold in basement areas you might notice is white mold. This type of fungi is also spotted growing on some plants.
Although smelly and irritating, white mold basement problems are not dangerous the way toxic black mold can be. And, you can get rid of your basement mold with a simple cleaning using water and bleach. First protect yourself with gloves, goggles and a mask so you will not breathe in fumes. Next, wet the area where the mold is growing with plain water. Scrape the mold off the best you can with a flat object like an old spatula. Next, prepare a solution of bleach and water. One cup of bleach to one gallon of water should do the trick, although you might also want to add a half cup of heavy duty detergent.
In a basement or on bathroom tile, try a scrubing brush to whisk away the mold. For more sensitive areas a damp sponge may work well. Once you believe all the mold is cleaned away, rinse the area thoroughly. Make sure you throw away all your gloves, the scraped mold, sponges, brushes and anything else you used. After the area is thoroughly rinsed, use a dehumidifier, open windows and turn on fans if possible to dry out the area. The best way to prevent mold appearing in the future, whether you are dealing with bathroom mold or basement mold is to keep areas dry.
